Kinds of Hydroponics

1. Nutrient Film Technique

Nutrient Film Technique, or NFT, is an active hydroponic system that uses pumps to circulate a thin film of nutrient solution through shallow channels. The plant roots dip into the solution to receive water and nutrients. It is an efficient system that can significantly reduce water usage.

  • Water pump: Moves the nutrient solution from the reservoir to the growing channels.

Six Easy Steps to Build a Hydroponic System Using PVC Pipes

  1. Set up the PVC pipes.
  2. Build the system structure.
  3. Set up the nutrient reservoir.

  5. Prepare the nutrient solution and timer.
  6. Allow the hydroponic system to run.

Choose a System Type

Select a hydroponic system that suits your needs, such as Deep Water Culture, Nutrient Film Technique, or a Wick System. Each system has its own advantages and level of complexity.

Prepare the Reservoir

Select a container that can hold the nutrient solution. Make sure it is large enough for your plants and suitable for the selected hydroponic system.

2. Deep Water Culture

Deep Water Culture, or DWC, is a hydroponic system in which plant roots are suspended directly in an oxygenated nutrient solution. The system requires a reservoir, growing medium, net pots, plant support, and an aeration system.

The plant roots must remain submerged in the nutrient solution while the pH level, water temperature, oxygen level, and nutrient concentration are regularly monitored.

Steps to Set Up a Hydroponic DWC System

  1. Germinate the seeds.
  2. Prepare the growing bed or reservoir.
  3. Prepare the reservoir lid.
  4. Prepare the nutrient solution.
  5. Set up the DWC system.
  6. Transplant the seedlings and monitor their growth.

Important Considerations

  • Lighting: Ensure that the plants receive adequate light. Use grow lights when natural light is insufficient.
  • Water quality: Use clean water with the correct mineral content for the selected nutrient solution.
  • Temperature control: Maintain a suitable water and air temperature for the plants.
  • Plant selection: Choose plant varieties that are well-suited to hydroponic growing.

3. Wick System

A Wick System is a passive hydroponic setup that uses a soft fabric string called a wick. A cotton or nylon wick absorbs water and nutrients from a reservoir and delivers them to plants growing in containers or trays.

Steps

  1. Choose a suitable wick material, such as cotton or nylon rope.
  2. Submerge one end of the wick in the nutrient solution.
  3. Connect the other end of the wick to the plant's growing medium.
  4. Place the plant container above or beside the reservoir so the wick can reach the solution.
  5. For a gravity wick system, create a hole in the container and securely attach the wick to a fitting.

Tips

  • Use plastic tubing or a covered reservoir to reduce evaporation.
  • Make sure there is no unnecessary slack in the wick so the solution can flow properly.
  • Refresh the water and nutrient solution in the reservoir regularly.
  • Place a small weight on the submerged end of the wick to keep it inside the solution.

4. Do-It-Yourself Hydroponic Gardening

Do-It-Yourself, or DIY, hydroponic gardening is a growing system that you build at home using readily available materials. Plants grow in a nutrient-rich water solution instead of traditional soil.

DIY hydroponics allows people to create customized systems for growing plants in small spaces, indoor environments, backyards, balconies, and urban areas.
